Frequently Asked Questions

The NFXF works closely with the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) to identify clinics that specialize in ataxia — a neurological condition characterized by the loss of muscle coordination, primarily affecting balance and movement. The listed NAF sites, while not specializing in FXTAS, have indicated that they have experience treating FXTAS patients. The NFXF has provided them with FXTAS and general Fragile X-related materials. Families may find the NAF clinics helpful for their ataxia-related problems.

While there is currently no cure for FXTAS, specialists may be able to reduce its severity or slow its progression with various treatment options. Multidisciplinary specialists often include genetic counselors, speech therapists, and physical therapists.

NAF was established in 1957 to help individuals with Ataxia and their families. Their mission is to accelerate the development of treatments and a cure while improving the lives of those living with Ataxia. Learn more about NAF Ataxia Centers of Excellence and Neurological and Specialty Clinics.

IFC clinics specialize in FXTAS. They are comprised of doctors (primarily neurologists and movement disorder specialists), therapists, researchers, and other specialists who treat FXTAS by drawing on the best available scientific knowledge of its known causes.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please connect with us. (We really do read all of them.)
