Challenging behaviors (such as tantrums, aggression, and self-injury) are often the most significant concern reported by parents of children with FXS. This presentation covers how to assess the functions of challenging behavior (why the behavior is occurring) by identifying the antecedents that “trigger” it and the consequences that follow it. Then, how to PREVENT the challenging behavior by changing the antecedents that trigger it, how to teach skills to REPLACE the challenging behavior with more desirable behavior, and how to RESPOND to challenging behavior by changing the consequences that follow it and rewarding desirable behaviors instead.
