Study: Identifying Translational Sleep Biomarkers in Autism

  • Condition: Fragile X Syndrome
  • Age: Adult 18+, Child
  • Sex: Male

The Manoach Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting a research study to explore brain activity during sleep and sensory processing in males, ages 12-19, living with Fragile X syndrome (FXS).

About the Study

Who can participate?

Males living with FXS between the ages of 12-19 years may be eligible to participate.

What will happen in the study?

If the individual qualifies and decides to be in this research study, they will come to the Lurie Center for Autism in Lexington, Mass., for 1-2 visits over 1-3 weeks. There is also a fully remote version of this study available for families who cannot travel to Massachusetts.

The following is a list of some of the activities that will happen during the study:

  • (If needed) 1-2 weeks of practice with the sleep headband at home.
  • Wearing a sleep headband for three consecutive nights at home to monitor brain activity during sleep.
  • Completing assessments and questionnaires with the study staff.
  • (Optional) Wearing an EEG cap to monitor brain activity while listening to tones and clicks.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

This study will help researchers understand the brain basis of disrupted sleep in Fragile X syndrome so that it can be more effectively treated.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

The main risks of being in the study are discomfort from the sleep headband and worse sleep than usual. There may be other risks that we do not know about yet.

Will I or my child be paid to complete this study?

Participants receive up to $350 for participating in this study. Travel reimbursement up to $20 is available for eligible families.
