Cognitive Development Intervention
Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) will include a variety of goals that impact cognitive development. These may be written as speech-language goals, sensory motor programming, behavioral plans, or academic goals. Goals are not written in terms of improving intelligence, but many areas of learning impact intellectual development. How is cognition assessed? Cognitive intervention with children who have fragile X syndrome can be most effective if based upon what we know about their cognitive
strengths and weaknesses and the interrelationships of cognitive development with sensory-motor, language, and behavioral growth. Research on learning among all types of children has pointed to the
importance of the early years. For children with fragile X syndrome, these early years are of vital importance for stimulating maximum learning.
