Cognitive Development Intervention

picture of two boys playing with toysCognitive intervention with children who have fragile X syndrome can be most effective if based upon what we know about their cognitive strengths and weaknesses and the interrelationships of cognitive development with sensory-motor, language, and behavioral growth. Research on learning among all types of children has pointed to the importance of the early years. For children with fragile X syndrome, these early years are of vital importance for stimulating maximum learning.

Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) will include a variety of goals that impact cognitive development. These may be written as speech-language goals, sensory motor programming, behavioral plans, or academic goals. Goals are not written in terms of improving intelligence, but many areas of learning impact intellectual development.
